I will have to try to raise money so Tyler can get all the medical treatments he needs. Just getting him home will cost a lot with gas over three dollars a gallon and George and Nathan will be coming 635 miles each way. Any amount will count up, even if it’s only a dollar.

Tyler has to come go home when they release him and then have surgery on his left leg to remove screws that are holding his foot to his leg. Then we have to come back to Maryland in six weeks for the jaw and leg to be checked. Then we will be coming back for a right leg surgery in six months. l hope Tyler will be able to fly by then.

There is no chance of getting insurance on Tyler. Medicaid has been a pain in the but to get them to pay for things. They wouldn’t Even pay for transport because we were from a state that doesn’t pay the same rate Maryland gets. I think all the air planes that are big enough for a gurney have to be paid for.

We thank the Children Flight of Hope for getting us up here. It’s a shame that Tyler wouldn’t be able to get through the little door so he could fly back. We just can’t take the chance of hurting Tyler’s leg and jaw. His leg must remain perfectly straight.

Tyler’s doing okay, but he is still bleeding from his mouth and having nose bleeds. He is also getting sick to his stomach, throwing up, but lots better than he was.

Update on Tyler…Friday, April 1, 2011

by Cathy Culpepper on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 1:27am

Sorry this update is late but I was out for the night and just got home.

Talked with Darlene around 8:00pm and she said Tyler was released from the hospital and transferred to The Ronald McDonald House around 7:00 pm. They are worried it was a bit early but Dr. Rodriguez was out of town and one of his partners released him. They think Tyler was released because they have SC Medicaid and it doesn’t cover all the charges in Maryland. They wish they didn’t have to struggle with the differences in Medicaid between the two states but will do whatever they have to in order to make things better for Tyler.

The other doctor did check Tyler over good and said the symptoms he is having is normal for this type of surgery. He is still bleeding a good bit from his mouth. Tyler hasn’t been able to sit up for long and still hasn’t eaten but a half cup of jello. Tyler is a little guy anyway and needs to eat but they know that will come with time.

The hospital would not transport Tyler to The Ronald McDonald House. His Medicaid wouldn’t pay for transportation so one of the nurses wrapped him in lots of blankets and helped his Mom get him to The Ronald McDonald House. My understanding was the two of them pushed him four blocks to The Ronald McDonald House. This had to be tough on all of them.

Tyler’s next appointment with the Doctor is Thursday, April 7, 2011. At that time, they will know how Tyler’s progress is going and hopefully when the family can come home.

Please keep praying for Tyler. He still has a long way to go. It’s so hard on his Mom and Nanny to watch him lay there bleeding from his mouth, not able to eat, and unable to move much. BUT, he still has not complained once. What a trooper!!!

Update on Tyler…Thursday, March 31, 2011

by Cathy Culpepper on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 9:52pm

Tyler is having a hard day today. He is swollen badly but the doctor said this is expected for a few days. He has been throwing up due to his body adjusting to the medicine he is taking and probably from some of the after effects of the surgery. There has been blood in it where Tyler has swallowed to keep from choking. He has also had blood dripping from his mouth due to the jaw surgery. This is normal for a few days but not easy to watch.

Due to the swelling of his jaw, he is unable to eat. Right now all he is eating is jello and it hasn’t been much of that. The hospital will not release him to the Ronald McDonald House until he is able to eat something on his own. This could be as early as Friday or Saturday afternoon.

Tyler’s leg is doing fine so far. Today the nurse put him in a hospital wheelchair and let him sit in it for about 10 minutes. He did well. Tomorrow they will try again several times throughout the day.

Tyler has not complained one time. He tries to talk to his Mom and his Nanny but with the swelling it comes out as mumbling. They have been able to understand him and it’s always “I’m ok” or “I love you”.

Ashley, Tyler’s Mom, is doing a lot better now. She talked to her husband and the other two children at home are doing well. Dad is taking good care of them.

Nanny….well she is worried about how they will get Tyler home to South Carolina. The plane is not equipped to transport him back so George and Nathan may have to make the 12 hour trip and bring everyone back home in the van.

On top of that, they haven’t been able to get Tyler a wheelchair to bring home that will support his right leg being kept straight. Darlene, hospital, and Ronald McDonald House is trying to find one. He will need it for 6-8 weeks at least, if not longer.

Everything has worked out thus far so the family has hope that these 2 issues will work themselves out too.

Tyler loves to receive mail. He can receive cards if you would like to send him one. The address is:

Thank you goes out to everyone for your prayers and love you have shown this family during this difficult time. Please continue to pray for Tyler as he still has a long way to go.

Update on Tyler’s Surgery

~I must apologize to all for being late on this update. Here’s what’s going on with Tyler…One of the family’s friends sent this information…Jess~

Here’s an update for all the wonderful, loving people who are praying for Tyler and his family. They got up this morning and Tyler was smiling big. He told Nanny that he was ready. He took a bath and they headed for the hospital. Before going in, he gave her and his Mom the biggest hug and told them again, he was ready. He entered the operating room with a smile.

Several hours later, someone came to update them and told them that once they got Tyler into surgery, plans changed. They did not take his hipbone as originally planned. Darlene said they would find out why once everything is over. Instead, they put in 2 metal rod stabilizers to keep Tyler’s leg straight and took some bone marrow from his leg. His leg must be straight for 6-8 weeks for healing. He cannot stand on it, go to the bathroom, or go to school. He must stay in a wheelchair for the 6-8 weeks with his leg straight out. The leg cannot be bent or it will break his femur bone and all this will have to be done again.

After putting the two metal rod stabilizers in his leg, jaw surgery would be next. They were told that bone marrow was taken from his leg to put in his jaw. They will remove all the old metal from his jaw and replace it with new metal and the bone marrow. It is going to be a long night for everyone. She estimated it may 10pm or later before they know anymore. As of right now, Tyler will not be able to ride the plane home from Maryland. His leg must be kept straight out and the plane does not have the room for this. Pray something can be done to help ease his ride home…but that won’t be for awhile.

George may have to drive from South Carolina to Maryland and pick them up in a van. We are unsure of this right now. Darlene asked everyone to add a special prayer for Ashley (Tyler’s Mom). She is having a hard time. I can’t imagine going through this and knowing there are two more children at home who need her too….ages 4 and 2. Lift her up in your prayers. That’s all I know right now. Darlene sounded positive but very tired. She picked on me once before she hung up and it made us laugh so hopefully her spirits are still up.

Hello everyone,

This will be the last update until we are in Maryland. We leave here on Sunday. I will relax and spend some special time with Tyler before he has his surgery on Tuesday the 29th…I will be with him no matter what. I told Nathan I had to go to the hospital with Tyler and would be gone a while. He looked straight at me and said, “No, no, stay here. I need you.” It breaks my heart to have to leave him. But I know he will be in good hands with George my husband and Fay the lady at the nursery who will also be helping out with Nathan. Richie, Tyler’s dad, will be keeping Tyler’s brothers Jayden and Ethan.

I just wish I could make it all better for Tyler and make it go away. I know I will be doing a lot of praying and crying because I worry so much, but God has my hand. They are taking all the metal and undoing all that has been done. They will be replacing the prior work with hipbone, so that’s going to mean a sore hip afterwards. His jaw hurts, and he is having leg pain, so he wasn’t able to go to school today.

Please pray for Tyler. This is going to be really hard on him and Ashley and myself. I know that God will be with us through this. Please everyone pray for my boy. Pray that he doesn’t have a lot of pain and that he’s not in the hospital long. I went out and got him some PJ’s today, three pairs so he would have them to wear in the Ronald McDonald House.

I had a yard sale to help with funding this trip and did really well with it. But boy, it was a job! Also, the people at Howling Wolf, have been putting money into Tyler’s account, so we will be okay. I thank them so much; they have really showed how much they care about not only Tyler, but about the whole family. There just aren’t enough words to say how much we appreciate what they have done.

Jessica, thank you for all the updating you do on Tyler’s page. You have been just wonderful, also donating when you could. Thank you so much. Thanks to everyone that has helped. There are just too many to send emails to every single one, so we will say thank you here. You all know who you are. I will try to make daily updates while Tyler is in intensive care.

Thank you so much for your kindness, caring and support!

Hello Everyone,

Well Christmas is over and we are into a new year. I hope it’s going to be a good one.

I want to thank everyone one more time for helping with Tyler’s and his family’s Christmas. He had a wonderful Christmas because you cared.

It’s been really rough on the entire family. Tyler’s dad just cannot seem to find a job and even if he did, he wouldn’t have any way to get there because they don’t have a car and live a long way from town. Tyler has been sick for seven years now. I do all the driving, taking Ashley to the doctors with Tyler or where ever they have to go. Don’t get this wrong…I don’t mind doing anything I can for Ashley and her boys. I just wish they would get a break. Job and car would make life so much easier.

Tyler is doing OK. His legs are hurting a lot and he’s having trouble eating. His mouth is twisting around when he tries to eat, causing pain.

I took some time to play with the boys yesterday. Jayden and Nathan were chasing a plane around, Tyler sitting on play-station and Ethan was riding his little car. They all seemed so happy. As I sat there watching them, I was wondering how Tyler could be so happy, knowing what he will have to go through in March. I found myself asking why. Why Tyler? I was angry, wondering why God let Tyler go through all this…why couldn’t it be me and not my little boy? I don’t know why; only god does. I’m really worried about the upcoming jaw replacement, to the point where I can’t sleep for worrying. It won’t be long and Tyler will have to go through all this again.

Please keep him in your prayers. Dr. Rodriquez said that we will be in Maryland about three weeks. Gosh it’s so hard to know that we will have to leave the other boys home and be away from them that long. It makes me want to cry. Ethan’s two, Nathan’s 3, Jayden’s four. Even though I know their daddy will take good care of them, it just breaks my heart to be away from them. I wish I had an apartment or some way to take them, but that would just make things harder.

I can remember Tyler when they put the titanium jaw in. He told me he was out of his body, floating toward a light, that he was seeing all kinds of things and then saw his mom crying. He said he went back to her. No eight year old makes something like that up. So please, please get everyone you know praying for Tyler. Maybe even put a link to his page on your web pages. God will hear your prayers. I don’t know what it is. I just feel different about this surgery. I pray God will hear my cries and not let Tyler suffer. This operation is life threatening. He will be in intensive care for a while. I will be having a yard sale for Tyler the first weekend of March. Details later.

Tyler has asked me to take money from his account to buy him a portable dvd player to take to the hospital with him. He has a bible his teacher got him for Christmas that he will also be taking to the hospital. Gosh March will be here in two short months.

Wishing for a Happy New Year for all of you. Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas. Thank you all so much. You made Tyler and his brothers have such a wonderful Christmas.

Tyler loved the TV and all the other things he got. He’s a special little boy. He told me not to forget to thank everyone. Too many to mention all the names, but you know who you are, so thank you so much!

Tyler also got a DVD player. Now his room is all set up so that when he has his jaw surgery on March 27th28th, he will be able to lay in his bed, watch movies, and play his games. What a blessing! Jayden got his remote car and lots of other things. Ethan got lots of baby toys and a ride on-car.

My children all showed up and we had a wonderful dinner after saying a prayer to think God for all he provides, and for blessing us with a great Christmas. We also played Dirty Santa (Yankee Swap to some of you) and had a wonderful time. Each person brought a $10 gift for the game. So everyone got a gift had a good time.

Tyler’s angels really did a great job seeing that he was taken care of. Tyler got lots of cards and loved them.

I’m so blessed to have you all and my grandkids. Time is passing so fast. March will be here soon and Tyler will have to have his jaw surgery. Please keep praying for him. He needs those prayers. I wish he didn’t have to have this surgery but I know he must.

We will leave on March 25th surgery March 27th28th. We had snow for Christmas. Tyler went out but didn’t like it because it made his legs hurt. God bless you all. We love you ALL.

I talked to Dr. Rodriquez. He is concerned about Tyler’s jaw he said that he is still hoping to do the surgery March 25, 2011. [The surgery date has been changed to 3/28 at 7:30 am. -JB]

He said that if Tyler gets to hurting or cannot eat he will have to do it earlier. He doesn’t want Tyler on a feeding tube, so the titanium jaw has to come out. He is setting up the surgery now so we will know when we have to be there. He talked about using bone in the jaw and removing the flap. He also said something about pulling the jaw to the other side.

I don’t understand what that was about. All I know is that my boy still has so much to go through. Dr. Rodriguez said he would just bring us to Maryland and do all this in one trip instead of making a trip to see him and another for surgery. Gosh March is just three months away. Please pray that Tyler will be OK and pray for me and Ashley this is so hard to watch TyTy go through this.

Dr. Rodriguez is awesome he cares about Tyler he donates his services but there are many other charges that we still owe. Medicaid pays some on the hospital but won’t pay the higher South Carolina prices, which leaves a balance for us. Last surgery we owed $2,000 after surgery. Thanks to some caring people that love Tyler, that has been taken care of. Two thousand wasn’t much considering what the surgery cost. The Howling Wolf Bar and Grille held a benefit for Tyler last Saturday (Thank You!) and raised some money to put in Tyler’s surgery account. It will help so much, but there will still probably be a balance to pay after the surgery.

Please sign TyTy’s guest book. It means a lot. Thank you all that are seeing that Tyler and his brothers have Christmas. We are blessed to have you in our lives.

I told Dr. Rodriguez that I truly loved him for all he does for Tyler, and he said, “I love you to sweetheart.” Now, how awesome is that?

Tyler is not in school today. He is hurting in his jaw and having trouble eating, He is eating…thank God for that. Pray that Tyler won’t have to live on a feeding tube. His legs are giving him a fit hurting because of the cold weather and the fibula being taken from both his legs.

I have my faith and know that god will be with us as we take Tyler for surgery number 45. How much more can this little boy take?
